Biography of
Samuel N. Bartlett

Samuel Newton Bartlett was the son of Martin and Elima (Graham) Bartlett. He was born April 11, 1838, at Townsend, Massachusetts. His classical education was commenced at Appleton Academy, New Ipswich, New Hampshire, and he entered college at the beginning of the course, August 24, 1860. Before his course was completed, he had frequent hemorrhages of the lungs. and was in a very delicate condition of health at the time of graduation. Immediately after leaving Hanover, he went to Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire, and visited with a sister and brother who were residing there, remaining until November, 1864. He then went home to his mother, at Townsend, Massachusetts, and remained there, gradually failing in health, until he died of consumption, December 28, 1864. It was a great struggle for him to give up life, wishing very much to live and carry on a work which he felt he had hardly begun.

During the last few weeks of his sickness, when he became aware that no human skill could save him, he became reconciled, and died very happy. He was never married.
