BEEBE, Rev. LEWIS, from Arlington, 1787, was the first settled minister, and obtained the lot of
land reserved for that purpose in the charter. He was ordained June 14, 1787, and dismissed May 6,
1791. While living in Arlington, he was a member of the first council of
censors, convened in 1785. This council was the most important ever convened in the state, as the task devolved on it of
reviewing and recommending the repeal of much of the crude legislation of the seven preceding
years. He removed hence to Lansingburgh, N.Y., and abandoned the clerical profession.
