Pawlet (VT) One Hundred Years
Hiel Hollister
1867
J. Munsell, Albany
PLUMB, Rev. ELIJAH W., D.D., from Halifax; married Sarah Woodman, of West Brattleboro, and succeeded Rev. John Griswold and Rev. Fayette Shepherd in the pastorate of the Congregational church, May 18, 1831.
He continued pastor until 1843. During his pastorate, and greatly by his exertions, the present beautiful church edifice was erected, which, at the time, was scarcely equalled in the state.
He graduated at Middlebury in 1824. His intellectual resources were immense and profound, and, for deep and comprehensive thought, he had few superiors.
His wife dying in 1846, aged 43, he married Alta Griswold, widow of Harry Griswold.
He removed to Potsdam, N.Y., in 1843, where, besides services in the ministry, he had charge of an academy.
