Biography of
Wilbur Olin Atwater 

Born May 3, 1844, in Johnsburgh, N.Y. Studied for two years in the University of Vermont before coming to Wesleyan. Entered Wesleyan, Class of '65, at the beginning of the Junior year. 
 

 

1865, Delegate of U.S. Christian Commission. Principal of Colchester Academy, Vermont.

1866, Principal of High School, Westport, N.Y.

1867, Principal of High School, Westport, N.Y.

1868-9, Studied in Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University.

1869, Ph.D., Yale University. 1869-71, traveled in Europe, studied in Universities of Leipsic and Berlin, making Agricultural Chemistry a specialty. 1871-3, Professor of Chemistry, University of Tennessee, Knoxville. 1873 (one term) Professor of Chemistry, Maine State College, Orono, Me. 1873, Instructor in Chemistry, Wesleyan University.

1874, Professor of Chemistry, Wesleyan University.

1875-7, Director of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, the first of its kind in this country. Was a member of the Board of Control until 1905.

1888-92, Director of Storrs (Conn.) Agricultural Experiment Station. In 1888 founded, and until 1891, Director of the Office of Experiment Stations, U.S. Department of Agriculture.

1894-1903, Special Agent in charge of Nutrition Investigations provided for by Congress in connection with this Department and since 1903, Chief of Nutrition Investigations, U.S. Department of Agriculture. Member of American Chemical Society, American Physiological Society, and Washington Academy of Sciences; Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science; Member Societe Chimique de Paris; Deutsche chemische Gesellschaft; Associate Member Societe d'Hygiene alimentaire et de l'Alimentation rationelle de l'Homme; Corresponding Member Societe Royale des Sciences Medicales et Naturelles de Bruxelles; Foreign Member of the Swedish Royal Academy of Agriculture; Corresponding Member of the Russian Imperial Military Academy of Medicine. Published papers are very numerous, including over 150 titles. Some treat of the chemical and other scientific investigations carried out by himself and under his direction, and have been publsihed in chemical journals and transactions of learned societies and government publications both in this country and in Europe; others of a more popular character have appeared in magazines and books. Best known as an experimenter on the nutrition of plants, animals and especially man.

1904, Received Degree of L.L.D. from Unversity of Vermont.

Married, Aug. 26, 1874, Miss Marcia Woodard, of Bangor, Me.

Children: Helen Woodard, born May 29, 1876; Charles Woodard, born April 23, 1885.
