"Born of Jewish parents, June 25, 1838, at
Wollstein, Prussia, and
trained in the strictly orthodox form of Judaism. At the age of nineteen,
he left his native land, for no definite reason as it seemed to him then, and
came to this country, friendless, and unable to speak our language. He
soon became acquainted with a truly Christian family, and through their
influence began to study the New Testament. He became more and more
convinced of truth concerning Christ, but for many months he could not give up
his parents and all, and make a public confession of faith. He was finally
led to Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting, and there came into the clear light, and
joyfully exclaiming, "Thou art Christ, the Son of the living God,' he
publicly confessed Christ, and in the presence of thousands, was baptized, Aug.
24, 1857. Soon came the Divine call to preach, then the struggle for an
education. His preliminary course of study was obtained at East Greenwich
Academy, and in 1865 he graduated at Wesleyan University." - Conference
