Biography of
 

George Hapgood Stone 

Born Nov. 22, 1841.  Passed the annual examination for Freshman year with Class of '65.  Aug. 12, 1862, enlisted in Second Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery, at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, Penn. 
 

 

In September, 1862,  taken with malarial fever of malignant type.  For ten days not expected to live from day to day.  Had thrilling experiences in service during the next three years.  Jan. 8, 1865, deciphered the Confederate "Series Cipher," their most secret and difficult cipher.  "Three days before the Confederates evacuated Charleston, we notified our General the exact hour when they would go out.  July 4, 1865, left Charleston, eighteen months from the day I landed on the islands near the city."  July 11, 1865, discharged at Hilton Head, S.C., and returned to Middletown in time to see the Class of '65 graduate.   September, '65, re-entered Wesleyan, in the Sophomore Class, graduating in 1868.

1869, In laboratory of H. A. Stone & Co., manufacturing chemists, Chicago, Ill.

1869-72, Professor of Mathematics in Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, Lima, N.Y.

1873-4, Civil Engineer in Chicago, Ill.

1874-81, Professor of Natural Sciences, Maine Wesleyan Seminary, Kent's Hill, Me.

1881-88, Professor of Geology in Colorado College, Colorado Springs, Colo.

1884, Assistant Geologist on the Glacial Division, U.S. Geological Survey.

1889, Wrote a report on the Glacial Geology of Maine.  This was afterwards revised and published in 1889 as Monograph XXXIV of the U.S. Geological Survey.  Title:  "The Glacial Gravels of Maine, and their Associated Deposits."

1888-96, Mining Geologist.

1893-94, Engaged in writing a large book on Money, especially treating of the neglected sides of the subject, - the moral and international issues involved in money, and the conditions necessary to secure the stability of the standard of value.  Book not yet published.

1905-6, Preparing a Scientific Guide-Book of the Pike's Peak region.  Have written articles for the American Journal of Science, and other Scientific Journals.

Fellow of the A. A. A. S., member of American geological Society, and several other scientific societies.

Married, July 13, 1871, Miss Mary H. Hill, A. M. of Bowdoinham, Me.

Children:  Willie Green, born June 7, 1872; died June 20, 1872.

Emma Ingalls, born June 19, 1878.

Alice Isabel, born Nov. 16, 1879.

Beulah May, born Dec. 10, 1880.

Frederic Clements, born Aug. 18, 1884; died April, 1898.

William Hill, born May 15, 1887.
