The class of 1865 entered fifty-one, the largest class up to that time that had
ever matriculated at Wesleyan. From '61 to '65 was the struggle of the
Civil War. Very naturally the class would be depleted as enlistments
occurred, or the boys were drafted into service. While the spirit of
patriotism ran high, twenty-eight of the original fifty-one remained through the
entire course, which, with seven additions during the course, made the
graduating class thirty-five. The class held its first reunion three years
after graduation, at which time an elegant, solid silver, medallion cup was
presented to the class boy, William Barnard Smith, son of S. K. Smith, born June
22, 1866, R. H. Rust making the presentation speech. The second reunion
was held during Commencement Week, 1870 at the residence of Prof. W. N. Rice on
High street.
