ATWOOD was born in Boston, Massachusetts, December 5, 1842, and was fitted for
college at Kimball Union Academy, Meriden, New Hampshire. He passed his full college
course with our Class. While in college he joined the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity; was orator
on the Adelphic Union exhibition, July, 1863; a member of the 'Technian Literary Society;
also of the Lyceum of Natural History ; also of Mills Society, and one of its vice-presidents
during Senior year. Among the athletic organizations he belonged to the Greylock Baseball
Club.
After graduation Atwood engaged in business in Boston, at first with the Revere Copper
Company, then with the Franklin Mining Company, and with a Boston merchant and ship
owner. He continued with these parties from his graduation until 1869, when he removed
to New York City and became the New York agent of the Revere Copper Company, of Boston, with offices at 250 and afterward at 242 South Street. He remained with this
company for several years, until some time after our Twentieth Year Class Report. During
Mayor Strong's term of service as mayor of Greater New York he was commissioner of
docks of the city, but had to walk the plank after Mayor Van Wyck assumed control.
Farther than this your Historian is unable to report, as he has not been able to make
connection with Atwood. All lines of communication seem to be broken, though letters
mailed to his address are not returned "Unclaimed." It is reported that he has been abroad
two or three times of late years. Presumably Atwood is away from home at present, beyond
the reach of my letters and of the data with which to make correct returns to my inquiries.
Hence there is no information about Atwood's forbears, his recent occupations there is a
rumor that he retired from business several years ago or his family, beyond the fact that
he married, September 19, 1871, Miss Nellie Leverich, of Brooklyn, New York, and previous
to 1883 they had lived nine years in East Orange, New Jersey. So far as known they have
had no children.
Atwood was for a time our Class secretary, and issued the 1893 Class Report. His
present address is Highland, New Jersey.
