JOHN COWIE CONGREVE was born in Brooklyn, New York, February 27, 1838. He
joined our Class at the opening of Freshman year, and was with us two years, 1859-61.
While in college, Congreve was a member of the 'Technician Literary Society, Mills Society,
Lyceum of Natural History, and Greylock Baseball Club. He was corresponding secretary
of the board of officers for the Biennial Celebration.
Very soon after leaving college, Congreve went into business in New York City as
an importer of steel rails and this continued to be his occupation till his death, July 27, 1882.
He always cherished a kindly remembrance of his college life and his Class associates.
