HUGH DOHERTY was born in Boston, Massachusetts, June 7, 1842. His parents
were Ross and Sarah (Doherty) Doherty. He fitted for college at the Boston Latin
School, and entered our Class in September, 1859. In college Doherty was a member of
the 'Logian Literary Society; was on the committees of arrangements for Biennial
Celebration, 1861, and Class Day exercises, 1863; a member of the Greylock Baseball
Club, and received an appointment on the Commencement program. After graduation
he entered upon the study of medicine with Henry G. Clark, M.D., Boston, and later
went to Harvard Medical School. While a student of medicine, he was appointed medical cadet, United States Army, and was detailed for service at Camp Dennison,
Columbus, Ohio, and at New Haven, Connecticut. He received his degree of M.D. from
Harvard in 1867, and soon after commenced he practice of medicine in South Boston,
where he continued to reside until his death, July 31, 1892. On taking up his residence
in South Boston, he joined the Phillips Congregational Church by letter from the Salem
Street Church, and continued a faithful and active member through life. He was at one
time clerk of the church, and also a deacon, holding the latter office at the time of his
death.
In 1872, about two years after his marriage, he went abroad with his wife, and for a
time practiced medicine in the hospitals of Dublin and London. Upon his return, well
equipped for his profession, he resumed what was to be his life work, all too brief,
indeed, in South Boston.
He was for years a member of the medical staff of Carney Hospital, and had charge
of one of its departments. Doherty's splendid physical manhood, his sunny temperament, and his cheerful view of life made him a welcome visitor in the sick room,
and greatly endeared him to many a home as a well-beloved family physician. As one
said, "He always brought sunshine with him."
Doherty was a member of several mutual benefit organizations, and held
remunerative positions as medical examiner and adviser. He was Grand Recorder and
Grand Medical Examiner of the Grand Lodge of the Ancient Order of United Workmen
of Massachusetts, and also the Supreme Medical Examiner of this body for the United
States, and likewise a member of the Masonic fraternity.
August 14, 1870, Doherty married Miss Emily A. Hazlewood, a sister of one of his
college roommates. They had two sons
1. William Hazlewood Doherty, born August 8, 1873; educated in the public schools
of South Boston and the Boston English High School. He then studied for a year in
Recker and Bradford's Commercial College, and entered mercantile business. He married Caroline Killen, June 16, 1896, and they have two children, a son and daughter.
2. Francis Webster Doherty, born October 11, 1878; educated in the public schools of
South Boston and was graduated from the Boston Latin School. He has also received
the degrees of B.A. (1900) and M.A (1901) from Harvard University, and is in course of
graduate study for Ph.D. degree in the classical and modern language departments
(Greek and Latin and German). He has taken a high rank throughout his university
career.
