Biography of
Miron (Myron) Winslow

MIR0N WINSLOW, the younger brother of Charles, whose sketch immediately precedes this, was born August 28, 1840, in Madras, India. The two brothers shared the same fortunes, being always together, until Miron left our Class to enter the army not long after the opening of the Civil War. During his year and a fraction in college Miron joined the 'Technian Literary Society, of which his brother Charles was also a member. Miron's name appears in the Gulielmensian, issued in May, 1861, but it is absent from our Class roll in the college catalogue at the opening of our Junior year, 1861-62. He probably joined the army between May and September, 1861. He enlisted as a private in Colonel Duryea's Zouaves, to which regiment Buxton and Newberry belonged. He was wounded during the seven days' battle in the Peninsular campaign, in 1862, and was honorably discharged.

Very soon after leaving the army he entered Columbia Law School and was graduated with the degree of LL.B. He then began the practice of law in New York City, at first on Nassau Street, later on Broadway, and now has an office at 120 Broadway, in the Equitable Building, one story above the offices of Van Slyck, but I warn you not to try to go from one office to the other without minute directions. The ways of some of the skyscrapers are mysterious and past finding out.

To all appearances Winslow is a faithful, trustworthy, and conscientious lawyer. But he is especially active and interested in the church of which he is a member, St. Agnes Episcopal Church, Ninety-second Street, not far from Columbus Avenue, one of the so-called chapels of Trinity Church, this latter parish being its founder and sponsor, where Winslow is the leader of a flourishing Bible class.

December 30, 1872, our classmate married Miss Adelaide Amelia Mariotte. She died in July, 1874, and six years later he married Miss Julia E. Curtis, daughter of Joseph and Sarah Curtis, of New York City.

They have one child, a son, Archibald Spiers Winslow, born September 19, 1881. He fitted for college at Trinity School, West Ninety-first Street, New York City, and won the McVickar prize, given for highest general excellence and scholarly attainment. He was graduated from Columbia University, in 1902, with Phi Beta Kappa rank. In the autumn of 1902 he entered the General Theological (Episcopal) Seminary of New York. He looks forward to the missionary service of his church as his life work.

Addendum on spelling as "Myron" or "Miron":

"In the sketch of Hawes, page 81, the first spelling is used, but this portion of the report was in print before Mr. Winslow informed me that his father, after whom he was named, always used the second spelling; so though he prefers the first, he decides to retain the second form.

"I find no standard authority for this spelling."
