Biography of Eli Winslow and Demaris Britt Eli Winslow and wife Demaris Britt appear in Choctaw County Mississippi in 1850 along with an infant daughter, Sarah. His census states he was from Alabama. Demaris was from Robeson NC and her parents were Alexander Britt and Nancy Prevatt. They left NC in 1838. Eli Winslow's wife and child and Alexander and Nancy Britt (Prevatt) moved to Jackson Co., Ark before 1860. They all lived in Richwoods Twp. The Civil War came to Jackson Co. in 1862 and Jackson County came under occupation of the Union Troops. Jackson County is very near the Mississippi River and had a Port (Jacksonport) for Steamships and made for an important area for the North and South.
Eli Winslow was too old for the conscript for the Confederacy, but in 1864 Eli Winslow and wife Demaris had 4 daughters and 1 son. They were Sarah, Susan, Caroline, Martha, and James. Eli died on Dec. 23, 1868 leaving several of his children under age. Letters of Administration on his estate were issued Mar. 25, 1870 to Abram May
